Sharon Swan’s Breast Cancer Journey: Hope, Healing, and Raising Awareness

Breast cancer is a journey that touches millions of lives, including my own. Through the highs and lows, I’ve found strength in unexpected places—especially through my love for photography. This page is my way of sharing my story, spreading hope, and raising awareness for those facing similar battles.

My Personal Journey

In 2015, I received a life-changing diagnosis: breast cancer (Invasive Ductal Carcinoma) in the left breast. This moment marked the beginning of a journey that would forever alter my view of life. From the initial diagnosis to the treatment process, I was constantly reminded of my inner strength and the unwavering support from those around me.

My treatment included a partial mastectomy and the removal of the sentinel node, followed by a second surgery to remove all the lymph nodes in my left armpit, as the cancer had spread. This was followed by chemotherapy (TAC) and radiotherapy.

Then, in 2024, I faced another diagnosis of breast cancer, this time Invasive Lobular Carcinoma in the right breast. After much reflection, I made the decision to undergo a bilateral mastectomy. This bold step significantly reduced my risk of recurrence or further spread, and thankfully, I was able to avoid both radiotherapy and chemotherapy this time.

Throughout this journey, photography has served as a powerful outlet for me to process and express the complex emotions that come with such an experience.

Healing Through Photography

Photography allowed me to focus on beauty and joy during a challenging time. Capturing moments, whether in nature or through portraiture, became a form of therapy and self-expression. It taught me that healing is not just physical but emotional and spiritual too.

After being diagnosed with breast cancer for the second time, I began a self-portrait series; to connect with my body before surgery. This work captures the raw emotions of my journey, focusing on the transformative experience rather than the individual. Through these portraits, I seek to evoke a deeper emotional resonance, expressing grief, acceptance, and the complexity of living with cancer and a changing body.

My journey with breast cancer is a testament to the power of hope, love, and creativity. Whether you're facing your own battle or supporting someone who is, remember: there’s strength in every step and beauty even in the hardest moments. Thank you for visiting this page and joining me in spreading awareness and hope.
